So this is Christmas, and what have we done?

Well, this past year the tech industry did a lot. Here are five key transformations:

  1. AI Agents arrive in the Workplace

    • From: AI models performing single-use tasks

    • To: Fully integrated agents handling end-to-end workflows, interacting with teams, and driving productivity. This will forever redefine enterprise operations.

  2. Services-as-Software

    • From: Outsourcing repetitive processes to IT service providers

    • To: Digital Workforce Equivalents (DWEs) replacing full-time employees in repetitive tasks, enabling companies to scale operations without increasing headcount.  My old industry is in for a wild ride.  

  3. Generative AI Beyond Content

    • From: Generating text, images, and videos for marketing and creative use

    • To: Generative AI creating code, strategies, and operational frameworks, transforming how companies innovate and solve problems

  4. Industry-Specific AI Adoption

    • From: Broad, generic AI tools requiring heavy customization

    • To: Pre-trained, industry-specific models embedded into workflows, accelerating adoption in healthcare, finance, and manufacturing.

  5. AI Governance and Transparency

    • From: Limited regulation and vague ethical guidelines

    • To: Concrete frameworks for accountability, bias mitigation, and governance, driven by global regulatory bodies and enterprise adoption

We’ve collectively covered a lot of ground these past 12 months - and if it feels overwhelming, it means you’re paying attention.  But rest up, then saddle up, as the geometric progression of AI and its impact on work will surely continue in ‘25.
