AI for Pros: Navigating the Ever-Evolving Landscape of Artificial Intelligence in Business and Employment

A Note from Malcolm
If you can do your job remotely, it can be moved to Bangalore. And now it’s a prime target for AI automation.
COVID may be largely in the rear view mirror, but its impact on knowledge work remains. Remote work is here to stay. 41% of jobs in Cary, North Carolina are remote. For Seattle it’s 36%, Washington DC 34% and San Francisco 33%.
This issue is driving the commercial real estate crisis, with vacancies remaining stubbornly high (at 35% in San Francisco, 25% in Chicago and 23% in New York). An associated financial collapse has been averted to date (with “delay and pray” financing) but this can only last so long.
Regarding jobs themselves, we’re now seeing a trend amongst employers to target remote workers and contractors for automation. For example, demand for freelance front-end developers has collapsed this year. Companies replacing remote work with AI automation is becoming a widespread trend.
So what does it mean? Two things: 1.) If you want to see how and where AI is eating work, look to remote and contractor jobs, and 2.) If you want to keep your current job, get back to the office and curry favor with your boss.
With that lens, here are some highlights from the past week at the intersection of enterprise AI and work:
