AI for Pros: Navigating the Ever-Evolving Landscape of Artificial Intelligence in Business and Employment

A Note from Malcolm
Executives and AI: Still hunting for El Dorado

Something peculiar is going on with enterprise AI, for (to date) there are no killer apps. And it’s not for lack of trying; large corporations have launched thousands of proofs of concept. Yet, nothing.

The Client/Server era produced an explosion of killer apps across finance, sales, HR, manufacturing and supply chain. Similarly, the Mobile era transformed communications, media, banking, delivery tracking and killed the airline check-in counter.

So why are there no similar AI-led solutions to date? Two leading theories:

  1. We’re in a gestation period between consumer innovation and enterprise adoption. It took a decade from the advent of the PC to widespread adoption of client/server enterprise apps, as supporting technologies (such as relational databases, open operating systems and TCP/IP) needed to mature. Today companies may need time to get their data, security and governance in order for industrial-grade AI.

  2. AI, like Cloud, is an infrastructure and efficiency play. Azure and AWS have become trillion dollar franchises by providing hyper-efficient and scalable tech infrastructure. AI is starting to do the same with knowledge and talent. The apps and processes are largely the same, but supported by better, faster, cheaper piece parts.

To date, AI adoption is mirroring the Cloud path.

Perhaps it's time for executives to focus on what AI can do vs. what it might and prioritize boring efficiency over sexy innovation.

With that lens, here are some highlights from the past week at the intersection of enterprise AI and work:
