A Note from Malcolm
They’re reopening…what? Three Mile Island?
Indeed. Constellation Energy, on behalf of Microsoft, is reopening the site of America’s greatest nuclear disaster.
Why? To deliver against the soaring energy demands of AI. To put things in perspective:
America’s 2,700 data centers (run mostly by Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft) consumed 4% of the nation’s electricity in 2022. That’s projected to grow to 10.4% by 2030.
A single data center can consume as much power as 80,000 homes.
A ChatGPT query uses 10x the electricity of a typical Google search.
Oh, but don’t worry. Three Mile Island is being rechristened as The Crane Clean Energy Center.
On that note, here’s the latest at the intersection of AI and work.
