If '24 was the year of the model and '25 was the year of agents, '26 is turning into the year of the harness. And it may be the most important development for driving bottom-line results with AI.
So, what exactly is a harness? Think about a thoroughbred. In competition, raw horsepower is table stakes. What's decisive is the guidance of the jockey through the bit and reins, steering that magnificent, willful, half-ton animal toward the finish line instead of the ditch. In AI, the harness is that guidance system: the bespoke software wrapper around the model (tools, memory management, and company-specific rules) that points raw intelligence in the right direction.
Until recently, executives have fixated on the AI’s muscle; which model is smartest / fastest / most powerful? Turns out that's now a secondary question, as the models have been converging. The key to enterprise AI success is the harness, to ensure AI delivers as intended.
For example, this past week Nvidia shared metrics on the accuracy enabled by their own AVO harness. On its own, Claude Opus 5 scored 30% on the ARC-AGI-3 reasoning benchmark. Fitted with their custom harness, the same model hit a perfect 100%. Same muscle, different reins. From mediocre results to A+.
And the right harness not only improves output, but also dramatically improves AI price/performance. For example, Databricks found that the same model on the wrong harness can double your model costs. LangChain proved the inverse just as sharply: tuning only the harness brought a mid-tier model up to Claude performance levels, at roughly one-tenth the cost. The rig, not the horse, closed the gap.
This should land hard for the suits. Remember MIT's gut-punch finding that only 5% of AI pilots achieve any form of ROI? The cause wasn't model quality. It was the "learning gap" from tools that don't adapt to or integrate with actual workflows. It was harness-failure by another name.
The market is moving fast on this. OpenAI’s Codex harness now has more than 5 million weekly users, up six-fold since February. Microsoft's Azure harness has autonomously handled 35,000+ production incidents, cutting time-to-mitigation from 40 hours to 3 minutes.
The takeaway? Stop shopping for a faster horse. Start investing in the rig that keeps it on the track. Raw muscle is fast becoming a commodity, an intelligence utility. The steering, of mapping your company’s secret sauce to AI, is the moat.
