I get it. We're all suffering from AI model fatigue.
At least the automakers have the decency to wait a full year between models. Remember Eliot Blues (mid car-chase) turning to his brother Joliet Jake to say, "The new Oldsmobiles are in early this year"? What’s important? At the Astra launch, OpenAI's president Greg Brockman ended with: "Welcome to the AGI era,” the claim that AI can now learn and handle most any intellectual task a human can. Bold claim, and here's the uncomfortable part: in watching Astra work, it's hard to argue. Full AGI? Not yet. Clearly headed there? Yes.
So what is the leap? To date, LLMs have provided us answers. Astra is about action. It doesn't just talk, it operates. In short, it can act like you. It uses the software you already own, browses the web, builds websites, drafts documents, reviews scientific data. And, critically, it completes multi-step projects, knowing what to do at each turn without being told twice, such as laying out a circuit board or modeling a house and turning it into a walkable video-game scene. It can deliver like the most capable person in your office.
To date, most are using AI as a tool to tap into sporadically, an ad-hoc convenience sitting completely outside your real workflow. Shifting from an occasional side-tab utility to an actual coworker changes everything.
